Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. Essay Example
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. Essay In this essay I am going to discuss the theme of schooldays and education in general. I will do this in relation to my study of the pre 20th century texts Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. I will also show how much the system has changed. During the 18th and 19th century mainly upper and middle class parents sent their children to Pe-ping (private) schools. The poor who could not afford education, which cost one pence per week, sent their children to church schools. The classrooms were often bare except for an embroidered text; this text was religious and was meant to be uplifting. Many girls didnt attend school. They were taught at home about practical things such as sewing and cooking but others did, as in Jane Eyres case, she was sent to Lowood for punishment. Poorer children were only at school for 2-3 years before they had to work for a living. Only 20% of children actually went to school at all. The girl students at Lowood were aged from 9 to20 years of age. The older students often taught the younger ones. However David could not as he was taught at home, he had no children to play with As to any recreation with other children my age, I had very little of that this was because Mr Murdstone believed that all children were bad influences towards David The Murdstones made all children out to be a swarm of little vipers and held that they contaminated one another. There are many differences between pre 20th century and today. From my study it seems that pupils were taught and almost ruled by fear. During classes at Lowood pupils were given several tasks and had to learn by heart. David also had to learn by heart but had difficulty remembering what he had learnt before I began to feel the words I have been in infinite pains to get into my head all sliding away this was because of the Murdstones The very sight of these two has such an influence over me this may be because of pressure and fear of what will happen to him if he couldnt remember what he had learnt. The conditions at Lowood were unacceptable by todays standards. The pupils marched all day from meals to prayers to classes to the sound of clanging bells and teachers voices giving orders. Mr Brockelhurst, who owned the school, didnt believe in coddling the poor. In his opinion the more the girls learned to put up with hardship, the more self-reliant they would be in later life. The building was in bad condition with cracks and crevices in the walls, wind, whistling through crevices of our bedroom window had made us shiver in our beds, and turned the contents of the ewers to ice and kept food to a minimum of porridge at breakfast which was only just edible, if not burnt. Whereas David had a better time learning as he was taught at home in the second best parlour, I come into the second best parlour but the atmosphere was intimidating with the Murdstones watching over David and his mother. Teacher pupil relationships happen all the time in todays schools with every pupil having a favourite teacher or one they can talk openly to. David did not really have someone like that unless you include his mother who was his teacher. Jane however did, Miss Temple. Miss Temple ran the school and tried to do what she could to make things better for the girls. For example after the porridge was burnt, she tried to make it up to them by ordering a special treat of bread and cheese. Also when she finds out the truth about Jane, she invites Jane and Burns to share her tea and buttered toast. She also brought out a cake of her own and shared it with them. This shows that Miss Temple felt sorry for both Jane and Burns, and disagreed with the way they were treated. The cane was used as corporal punishment around the country. This punishment was used on David who reacted strongly and emotionally. Through anger he bit the executor, Mr Murdstone who later sends a sign saying, careful he bites to the school that David attended. The same punishment was used in Jane and Burns case as they had signs of Rebellious and Vain hung from their necks and were made to walk in circles in the rain. This was because Burns had naturally curly hair; that was frowned upon in school and was considered to be vanity. At the same time Jane was punished for being rebellious because she offered for her hair to be cut instead of Burns. Both were punished in other instances, Jane when Mr Brockelhurst came to the school and singled out Jane, announcing to the school Mrs Reeds charge of her being a liar. He tells the other girls that they should not talk to her all day. Jane had to stand alone for half an hour in the middle of the hall on a stool. She felt humiliated at being singled out as a liar. Burns gets punished for having dirty nails (although she didnt explain that the ewers were frozen) and is sent to a room to fetch a bundle of twigs. She does this as if she is doing a drill. She gets the twigs and undoes her collar but shows no emotion as she is being struck, she does though when she is alone as Jane sees her putting away her handkerchief. I looked narrowly as she emerged from the book-closet she was just putting back her handkerchief into her pocket, and the trace of a tear glistened on her thin cheek. This was because she didnt want to give Miss Scatchard the satisfaction of seeing her cry. In conclusion I believe that the system has changed dramatically and to great effect, every child has the chance to go to school, with no discrimination whether they are female or a different race. There is no physical punishment in schools; the only punishment given out is detentions, which parents are notified before their child stays behind. The buildings are in great condition and the teachers are strict without being unfair to pupils. Parents have a say about the way their children are treated teachers can not take dramatic action at the spur of the moment, though teachers can stop a child from learning by sending the culprit out of the classrooms. Facilities have changed with technology, with nearly every school having ICT facilities. With lessons becoming fun by using computers, the internet, videos and other tools of education and recreation.

Entering the war was the best course of action for Russia in 1914 Essay Example
Entering the war was the best course of action for Russia in 1914 Essay Example Entering the war was the best course of action for Russia in 1914 Essay Entering the war was the best course of action for Russia in 1914 Essay On August 1st 1914 Germany declared war on Russia therefore bringing Russia into a European war. The Great War lasted 4 years but Russia pulled out in 1917 due to problems back home. The reason why Germany declared war on Russia was that it had mobilised it forces and was heading towards Germany.Russia entering that war had both good and bad points for the country and indeed the rest of the world. Many say that cause of the war was the death of Arch Duke Ferdinand air to the Austrian throne. This did spark of a string of events but Russia made some of its own contributions to the war.Russia was a backward country still following Feudal laws and ideas. This caused them to be behind in both industry and agriculture. Russia owned a vast empire that dominated a large percentage of the world. Having people in the west who were in sight of Germany and others in the east in sight of Japan should show the vastness of the land. The people were being led by the tsar and this one man was in cha rge of the whole country this in itself led to many problems. The tsar was isolated from any contact from the outside and any information he was given would have been by his ministers who would have lied to better themselves or to protect themselves. Keeping this in mind that would have been unable to see the state of the people and maybe not have known the state of his army. So when he committed himself to war this factor should be taken into account so not to totally blame the tsar. The tsar was looking out for Russia by committing them for a course of war as it had potential to benefit them. Russia Empire was vast and they would not want to expand much more but to keep its borders strengthened. With the Germans growing in power in the west their eyes would have been set on spreading their land towards the east into Russian lands. With this in mind the Russians had began negations with France which stated if one of them was attacked the other would come to the aid. This was known a s the triple entante France would have agreed, for it would have feared for its own safety from the German threat. By agreeing to this treaty Russia is also keeping its friendship with Europe strong as it would need them to trade with also if it let Germany take on France alone France would lose. This would seem a good idea as they would lose no men and could let Europe sort it out but sooner or later Germanys eyes would turn onto Russian held lands. This was Russias best chance to crush Germany before it grew strong enough to take on Russia.Germany had also been thinking of these problems that it could end up with a war on two fronts so it had made an alliance of its own called the triple alliance this had Germany, Italy and Austria. Austria was looking to expand its own borders as countries were breaking away from the failing Turkish Empire one of these was Serbia. Serbia was important to the Russians as it was Russias only way into the European sea via the phoseprus. The Russians didnt use this as there excuse when they came to the aid of Serbia when Austria attacked. Russia said it was the mother land and protected the Slavs. Austria attacked Serbia using the death of Arch Duke Ferdinand as its reason to blaming it on Serbian terrorists. If Russia had let this happen and not intervene Serbia would have been crushed and its way into the European seas along with it. She then mobilised her forces towards Austria and Germany.Russia had only thought up to battle plans for the war each of these so detailed once the wheels had been set in motion then they couldnt be stopped. One of these was the mobilisation of her forces all out against Austria sending men to the aid of Serbia and keeping its entrance to the sea open. The other was to split its forces and go after both Austria and Germany. The alliances were well known around the world and Russia was aware that Germany may go to the aid of Austria therefore would be forced to attack them. The Russian military de cided to split her forces and go after Germany and Austria. Some could say this sparked of the chain of events that brought Germany, France and Britain into the war. The Germans then seeing Russian troops coming into their land declared war on Russia. France then came to its allys aid by declaring war on Germany.Russia had been in a war with Japan just 9 years ago and had suffered a terrible defeat and was in need of a victory. The Russians had a past of military wins and would think that they could win this. There was wide spread belief that the war would be over in a short space of time. The war sent a wave of patriotism across the country which saved the tsar from a lot of the problems that was going on in his country as peoples attention turned towards the war and away from the problems back home. The Russian economy was not prepared for a long term war though and soon the realisation of the war came in and supplies were unable to get to the front of be produced quickly. In the past a war has boosted a countrys economy by making industries make large produce as the government will by it of them. New ideas start to come about and new inventions are designed. All across Europe countries had been going through an industrial revolution that had been happening naturally. Russia had tried to forces its country to have one and it wasnt working as they drafted in peasants from the country side and output went down by 50%. This is because the peasants didnt have any real training for use of the machines. This also caused agriculture produce to go down and this was Russians primary export.Russia merchant fleet was terrible and that is putting it in a nice term. Russian merchant fleet combined with Finlands accounted for 5% of the worlds tonnage. Half of this was sail powered and therefore was at the mercy of the elements and would been seen as a joke by any enemies ships who could ram through the ship to save ammo. Russia was trading with other countries at the time but wasnt exploiting its huge resources it had in the east and was importing lots of resources it had. This could be accounted down to the fact that there wasnt an efficient transport system to get goods from east to west. The transport system problem also would leave troops stuck at one station which had multiple entrances but only one exit. This would mean that men and supplies wouldnt be able to get to the front line in time. Men could get there but not have enough supplies to survive. This is the story of 1 rifle between 3 men came about. Russian troops had a wave of patriotism about them that would have made them good fighting men due to the fact they are willing to die for the country. The generals were unable to or did not take advantage of this fact. The generals themselves were behind in idea of warfare and most of them were put into the job because of their social status. There were not enough generals who had risen through the ranks and knew how to fight and win a war.Bari ng all of these factors in mind you could say the idea behind going to war was a good one. There were many points to be gained and could be seen as a wise move for the future. Although the lack of a good transport system, merchant navy and industrial system. The country wasnt ready for the vastness of the task ahead.

Compare and contrast snow crash to the matrix Essay
Compare and contrast snow crash to the matrix - Essay Example Bob Rifeââ¬â¢s virus from spreading, Neo in the Matrix movie does the same but his fight is directed to machines. Hiroââ¬â¢s fight is simple as compared to the task that Neo engages into. The Matrix movie spreads a darker picture as compared to Snow Crash because of the heroic acts that Neo has to engage into to achieve justice. This paper will compare and contrast the Snow Crash novel and The Matrix Movie. As stated above, the two works present dystopian perspectives into the future where the societies in the two works are grappling with certain problems. The two societies face problems that must be urgently solved so that people can lead happy lives. The struggles can be seen in the main actorsââ¬â¢ engagements trying to solve these issues. However, the problems are not entirely the same as in the Snow Crash, Hiro fights against the spread of the virus while in the Matrix, Neo fights with machines. Clearly, this puts The Matrix on the higher edge in terms of the magnitude of the problem. In the movie, The Matrix (1999), the audience has been put in a future dystopian society, where human beings are living a somewhat normal life but again different because they are enslaved and are used as powering gadgets for their rulers electrical requirements. They have been imprisoned and are misused to power the sentient machines. The problem arises from the fact that the sentient machines rebel against the human population because the stormy clouds blocked the sun, which acted as their main source of power. Therefore, for them to survive they have to get power from the human body heat and this is what Neo fights vehemently. Human beings are forcibly put in pods, from where the thermal energy and bioelectricity are taken out of the human beings for use by the machines. The machines also use control the minds of the human beings using cybernetic implants. This is clear in Neoââ¬â¢s statement where he says, ââ¬Å"I don't like the idea that I'm not in control o f my lifeâ⬠(Wachowski and Wachowski). This misuse of the human beings links them to a simulated reality known as the Matrix and is what Neo tries so hard to fight against. This heroic act is like fighting against a ruler or something superior by many standards. This virtual reality world, simulated by the program characterizes the civilized world that has enslaved the minds of human beings, but cannot comprehend this. This is clearly seen when Morpheus says, ââ¬Å"If real is what you can feel, smell, taste and see, then 'real' is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brainâ⬠(Wachowski and Wachowski). Stevensonââ¬â¢s depiction of the future in unpleasant but is not forsaken as people like the one Morpheus and Neo are determined to destroy the entire ruling class having attained enlightenment. For example, Morpheus says, ââ¬Å"I'm trying to free your mind, Neo. But I can only show you the door. You're the one that has to walk through itâ⬠(Wachowski and W achowski). Despite the fact that there is similar injustices in Snow Crash where bleak institutions have replaced the democratic ones, the injustice is not similar because the human beings show the ability to adapt to the changes. In his work, Snow Crash, Neal Stephenson, portrays a similar dystopian that is present in The Matrix. Just like in the movie, where the existence of the machines upsets human beings, the existence of the lethal drug known as the Snow Crash makes life unbearable because of the dependence and makes Hiro, the protagonist determined to des

In-Class Assisgnment #1 (Social Science) Assignment
In-Class Assisgnment #1 (Social Science) - Assignment Example The mere mention of this problem makes both the staff and the student body to feel uncomfortable. Administrators are trying hard to find the solution to this problem which has proved to be very challenging (Iarovici, Doris 33). I would use this information to advise the schoolsââ¬â¢ administrations to build upward and increase more parking garages so as to have more parking spaces. Students should also be advised to use alternative means to get to school like the public buses. Other parking lots are not far away from the schools, so students can usually walk from these places to get to school. Another concern is that the costs of books are not pocket friendly to students. This makes students not buy all the books that they require for their course work. One way to solve this problem is to have digital books available which will be affordable. Having a web site where these books are available can also be helpful since what the students will need to do is just to log in and search for the book online. But for the meantime the government should intervene and regulate the cost of the books to make them affordable. Another problem faced by college students is the length of some courses which are very long. This is not a good idea because most of the students will get lost along the way since it is not usually easy to keep track more so when the road is too long (Prince-Hughes, Dawn 50). For this concern, it would be advisable that if this courses can be integrated to smaller courses and be done in different semesters so as to save students the agony that they go through in the long

Eight Elements of Communication Essay
With the importance of communication placed on the development of the human society, it is indeed necessary to understand the different elements that make it sensible for creating the necessary involvement within the human communities around the .world. To have an overview and understanding of the said elements, this paper shall discuss the different impacts of the elements upon the improvement of human relations within a globally connected society. à The discussion of the eight elements shall be discussed separately to individually identify their strong effects on the developmental procedures of the human society. (A) Message Sending Approach Every conversation begins in the process by which the speaker sends the message to the listener. The procedure by which the listener catches the message however depends on the process by which the sender sent the idea that he wants to convey to the listeners. (B) Receiving the Message As it could be observed, the ways by which the listener receive the message depends on the way the speaker primarily sent the idea through the approach that he made in the speech that he adapted while sending the message. (C) Evaluating the Message Evaluation of the message depends on the listenerââ¬â¢s background regarding the idea being sent to him. It is through this background that he is able to make careful amends with the ways on how he is to evaluate the idea shared to him through conversation. (D) Understanding the Message Understanding involves the capability of the listener to make connection between the message and what he already knows about the topic being presented in the conversation. (E) Responding to the Message The response that the listener makes on the message that has been sent to him depends on how far he was able to understand the idea that is presented to him. Responding is the way by which the conversation is brought towards the development of continuum. (F) Making the Conversation Work The exchange of thoughts makes conversations work. The effective use of the different elements of communication makes it possible for the listener and the speaker to continue exchanging their ideas. (G) Sending the Right Message through Body Language At some point, the body language of the person speaking coveys at least 40% of the words that he is actually speaking. It is through this that people are able to make amends on the different flaws that the speaker makes during the conversation. (H) The use of Facial Expressions If body language gives 40%of the speech being sent, facial expression at least shares a 20% of the message that is sent to the listener. Through the enumeration and definition of the eight elements of communication, it could be noted that conversations are bound to become effectively disposed through the different background and bodily presentations of the message on the part of both the listener and the sender of the message. Being able to do so makes it possible for people to constantly create possibilities in making conversations work for the best results for the ones involved in the discussion.
